What does the future hold for legumes in food and agricultural systems? This is exactly what we discussed in our hybrid scenario workshop, organised in the frame of the Leibniz Protein Paradoxes, LegumeGap, and LegumesTranslated projects.
The workshop hosted by the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) and scientists Moritz Reckling, Ioanna Mouratiadou and Sonoko Bellingrath-Kimura brought together experts and early-career scientists working on legumes and scenario development to brainstorm on the future of legumes. We discussed and developed scenarios on future legume consumption and production, the role of legumes in EU and global food and agricultural systems, and the implications for human health and the environment. The scenarios are linked to the recently published Eur-Agri-SSPs.
A great thanks goes to contributions from an international network of colleagues that supported the event as speakers or group moderators. That includes Christine Watson from the Scottish Rural College, Frederick Stoddard from Helsinki University, Nynke Schulp from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Martin Schönhart from BOKU University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Hermann Lotze-Campen and Benjamin Bodirski from the Potsdam Institute for Climate impact Research, and Tilman Grune from the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbrücke. The developed scenarios aim to serve as input in scientific and policy discussions on the future of legumes in Europe.
